What do I wear?
We will not be asking for full show attire as we know this can be expensive, but we would like competitors to make an effort with a smart appearance. This includes white or cream jodhpurs if possible, a shirt and tie or a Bank Farm polo shirt, and a Bank Farm hoody or plain jumper for cold evenings. Riding boots or jodhpur boots are preferred to yard boots or wellies. The showing classes will award marks for a smart appearance of pony and rider. All riders must wear a riding hat that meets current safety standards, and body protectors may be worn but are optional at the discretion of the rider.
I’ve not been riding very long. Can I still take part?
Yes! For all our events there are beginner level and lead rein options, and the points awarded for doing well in those classes will be the same as for higher level classes, so it’s a level playing field.
How will classes be scored and judged?
All classes will be judged in accordance with the rules of the governing body in that discipline (e.g. British Dressage, British Showjumping etc.). As well as our staff, we have a number of people who have volunteered to judge, riders experienced in competing. Further notes as follows:
Showjumping: The showjumping events will include our biggest range of classes. 30cm, and above classes will be run as one round with those going clear over the first ? jumps then being timed over the final ? to place (? Depends on how many jumps we have in the course). The scurry, and pairs classes will both be timed from the first jump to the last jump. Chase me Charlie will start at 65 cm and continue until one rider remains.
Dressage: tests will be available at the start of the season for all dressage events so you have time to practice (running round the garden at home!). If you need help understanding the elements of the test you can ask a member of staff before the competition day.
Showing: we will incorporate showing classes into dressage evenings depending on demand.
How many people will place and earn points in each class?
Rosettes will be awarded to places 1 to 6 in each class. Points for classes with 6 or more riders will be awarded as follows:
Taking part in any class: 1 point
1st place: 10 points
2nd place: 8 points
3rd place: 6 points
4th place: 4 points
5th place: 3 points
6th place: 2 points
Where a class has fewer than 6 riders, points will be adjusted according to the number of people in a class on a descending scale.
Can I use a riding school pony and how will I know which one I will get?
You can use a riding school pony.
What if I need help during a competition?
We’re pretty friendly! We want everybody to have fun and progress in their riding, and so we will support and assist where necessary to allow everybody to achieve and do the best they can. We do ask that those in lead rein classes have an adult to lead them.
Sounds good! How do I sign up?
You can sign up to any events in the season right now, or you can sign up as you go along (but remember league members have a discounted entry fee). Entries will close the day before the show.
December date TBC: Presentation evening! Who has racked up the most points overall? Who is our dressage diva or our showjumping star? Who gets the prize for most improved or most effort? Who gets the prize for most frequent faller off?
All events start times will vary in Winter/Summer; they can be as early as 5pm in the summer nicer months and as late as 6pm starts in the winter colder months and run until we are finished (end time will depend on number of entries and classes). We would appreciate riders spending a few minutes helping to get out and put away jumps, equipment away, helping with the gate and putting jumps up when required. Before, after and during events, if possible.
CROSS COUNTRY CLASSES WILL BE RELEASED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
The focus of the league will be on fun and achievement for everybody. We’ll all learn and progress together over the year and improve our riding and horsey know-how!
